How is it so hard to understand that the Niners couldn't afford those picks? Why does seemingly nobody appreciate one of the reasons the Niners traded the picks for Lance is because they couldn't afford them? How can fans be so clueless about the salary cap realities the Niners face?
The following players on the roster are all paid at top of market at their positions:
LT - Trent Williams
TE - George Kittle
WR - Deebo Samuel
RB - CMac
LB - Fred Warner
DT - Arik Armstead, Javon Hargrave (couldn't have signed him if they had 1st and 2nd in 2023)
DE - Bosa about to be
CB - Charvarious Ward (last year's FA singing that couldn't have been afforded with a 1st rd pick)
Would you rather have all these guys or two lottery ticket 1st rd picks? I'd rather have these guys.
Moreover, the Niners have done well with later rd picks and have a team strategy to take advantage of the NFL's minority executive and coaching incentive program, that gets them 2 extra 3rd rd picks per promotion.
That all said, the obvious move was to select Micah Parsons at #12 instead of trading for Lance or taking any other QB, but the fact is the Niners needed a QB. At the time the move made sense. Nobody can predict how these will pan out when the decisions are made.
The same people who traded for Lance also drafted Hufanga and Purdy, and Greenlaw and Warner and Kittle, and Deebo and Aiyuk, and more. They are also the ones who signed Ward and Hargrave. And, most importantly, they have had their team in the NFC Championship Game in 3/4 years. I'd say they know what they are doing a whole hell of a lot more than reactionary and whiny Niners fans who really are annoying.
