It is odd that they fought Stanford and Cal for so long, two storied programs.
I think it was because UNC considers themselves to be in the same category as FSU and Clemson, and all three want the ACC to go away "earlier than currently possible" because they see it to be in their interests. UNC may be delusional in thinking of themselves this way, but apparently they do.
NC State was simply tied to UNC's vote ... until it wasn't. That's state politics there, mostly, I think, and a realization that NC State, no matter what, is not in the same group as FSU and Clemson and when push comes to shove Carolina would probably treat them the same way UW and UO treated WSU and OSU. So they flipped.
