Well, I didn't think it would be that much of a margin, but I felt confident the Niners would win comfortably. Of course, I don't bet on sports either. If I made a giant bet on the Niners -3.5 I would have made a lot of money, but I'm convinced if I did, they would not have covered. I know it's crazy to think that way, but much like a coach of a team, I hate losing more than I like winning, so I don't want to even entertain it happening.
Anyway, being in CT, I get to see the Giants, Jets, and Patriots every week. The Giants and Patriots are arguably the two worst teams in the NFL. The Jets are better than those two, but they are not a great team by any means. And Dallas lost to a 1-4 Cardinals team the Niners beat by 19. I knew the Dallas D was fraudulent because I've seen these Northeast teams play a lot. That includes the Saints - who aren't great themselves - blasting the Patriots 34-0. I mean even yesterday, yes the Jets won, but the Broncos D, and offense, are both awful. Hell, so too is there special teams. So the truth is, the Cowboys played one good team, and as a someone on a YouTube comments section said, "baby seal hunted" them.
I knew going into this season the Niners had the most talent they've ever had, but having talent isn't as important as putting it together and realizing its potential. As someone who has seen all 5 Niners Super Bowl winners I was not overly impressed with the team through the first 4 games. I thought they were the top team in the NFL after Week 4, but not a dominant team.
The 42-10 woodshed beating of "America's Team" (don't hear that too much any more do you), demonstrated what all that talent absolutely can do. FHOF Brock Purdy's tiny cap hit has broken the NFL and positioned the Niners to be the greatest team in if not NFL history, certainly their own. My season prediction was 13-4, but this team has the ability to go 17-0. Obviously, it won't likely happen, but that's how good this Niners team is and can be.
But it gets better. They get pass rusher Randy Gregory next week, and the teams with the two best available pass rushers on expiring contracts are 1-4 (Vikings' Danielle Hunter) and 0-5 (Panthers' Brian Burns), teams that are going to trade them.
No team in the NFL is better positioned and more willing to trade more to get one of them, and OMG do I want Danielle Hunter who is tied for #2 in NFL in sacks with 6. I'd trade a first and 2nd rd pick to get him, and would not be outbid.
49ers talent is terrific. But this is not the most talent they have ever had. Look at the ‘84 roster….. Not to mention ‘88-89. But this may be their most talented post-cap roster.
Game reminded me of the ‘81 shellacking of Dallas. The one in which “the real Cowboys” weren’t there. Leading to Bill Walsh’s great line “ I guess they have two teams…..”. That and the Pittsburgh game put that team on the radar.
Great start. They look fantastic. But you don’t win a Championship in Oct. Stay healthy.
Brock was fantastic last night. Only one pass I wish he didn’t throw and that’s the pass short middle that almost got McCaffrey killed. CMac took a beating. Cowboys obviously keyed on stopping him. (BTW- last two weeks he’s been the recipient of a vicious face mask. The hold and pull type. ) But…. Pick your poison. Good to see Kittle show his stuff. Chiefs can have Kelce. I’ll take Kittle.
