Well, my last post certainly seems to have aged well.
Shanahan is at a point of straw grasping to such a degree that his answer includes moving Wilks from the booth to the field. I have a sneaking suspicion that from where the defenses are called is not the main issue. It's the calls being made and the execution of the defense that matters. Wilks could call the plays from the International Space Station, or be in the huddle with the defense telling them the defense to employ and if the players don't execute, it's not going to matter. I'm not sanguine given the fact David Lombardi asked Fred Warner what he thought about Wilks going from booth to sidelines and Fred said he hadn't heard that. Yikes, how can a reporter know this before the captain of the defense?
The video of the Bengals game on defense looks worse after a week, especially after watching a depleted Bills team play much better in Cincinnati on defense than the Niners did at home against them.
It does not seem like an exaggeration to say this game this week in Jacksonville is the biggest test with the most pressure on him to win that Shanahan has ever had as a Head Coach, when you factor in the elements. Most talented roster in NFL, 5-0 start, team talking about being Super Bowl contenders, on 3-game skid, defense falling apart with new DC now forced from booth to the sidelines, All Pro LT's availability in doubt, backup LG, everyone ready to pounce on his young QB after scoring just 17 points in the last three games, after acquiring Chase Young, coming off bye where everyone expects your team to have its shit together, after you just got signed to a big contract extension.
The fan anger is going to be off the charts in a way the Niners have never seen if they don't beat a very good Jaguars team at a 10am body clock start time.
Good luck Kyle!
It is a big game. Hopefully Young helps. Jags are a very solid team. Balanced offensively. Very good against fun defensively. Hopefully Williams plays. Banks is probably out. Left side of o line was a strength. Maybe not so much now.
. I don’t remember any rumbling from you about Shanahan when the 49ers were 5-0.
I also seem to recall you whining about Shanahan last year too, and the 49ers were struggling. Not so much when they went on a run and made it to the NFC championship
What was being done wrong that would warrant criticism when the Niners were 5-0? I was concerned about the Defense against the Rams and Giants, and to a degree Cardinals, but the Cowboys game washed it all away. The defense did enough to win against the Browns, but got hosed by the refs in a serious way. Still allowed a journeyman backup to put up too many yards and points. The Vikings game was effectively lost on one bad defensive play call, thought they did not play well in the game overall. And the Bengals was the worst defensive performance since at Las Vegas last year.
The Offense Shanahan personally runs has also had its own problems over the 3-game losing streak. Shanahan is in charge of both D & O, is he not? I will give him a pass for the Bengals game and the players playing poorly, as they are likely to have at least one bad game during a season. But the Browns and Vikings losses were inexcusable for different reasons.
Thanks, you proved my point.
