A needed back up catcher
Good signing, I think. His OPS has been between .850 and .900 three of the last four seasons he's played, including the last two (.894 and .873). Last year hit much better as a catcher, versus DH, though his career splits indicate the reverse Crushes both LHPs and RHPs equally, more patience against RHPs. Wouldn't be surprised to see him as DH. Had 8 HRs and 12 doubles in 145 ABs last year. 0 for 5 as PH last year. Usually hits in the 7 or 8 hole.
Slightly below average behind the plate, but not ridiculously so. Had a cannon for an arm up until 2019. Last season only threw out 1 in 27 stolen base attempts.
Played one game at Oracle last year, went 1 for 4 with a single, got on base on catcher's interference (Bailey). Struck out looking against Manaea and Junis. He must have called a decent game, Mariners won 6-0.
Injury prone. Missed 2020 with a fractured foot. Has had multiple shoulder surgeries. An oblique injury shortened one of his minor league seasons.
Giants actually took him off waivers in 2019, then traded him to Seattle where he hit 18 HRs in 75 games.
