Was just thinking about how well Stanford alum John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan work together. Must be a relief to the York family after having an initial taste of post-DeBartolo greatness when Harbaugh coached them to a Super Bowl, then Jed fired JH after his terrible 8-8 year (sarcasm alert). Harbaugh went 44-19-1 with the 49ers, 5-3 in the postseason. Predictably, Trent Baalke won the battle, and off goes Harbaugh to UMich and an 86-25 record, and off go the 49ers to 5-11 (Tomsula) and 2-14 (Chip Kelly). Trent, somehow, remains GM for two more years and leaves the 49ers almost completely bereft of talent.

Entre Lynch and Shanahan. On the same page from the very beginning, they endure two tough years before they can completely reface the roster, and have been in the NFC championship game three of the last four years. And now that Shanahan has his preferred quarterback, they will hopefully get to another NFCCG, and ultimately a Super Bowl win.

Somehow, some way, Baalke was lost in NFL assistant wilderness, joins Jacksonville in player personnel, becomes player personnel manager, interim GM, then GM. They've gone 3-14, 9-8 and 9-8 on Baalke's watch. Baalke lucked into Coach Pederson, who, like Harbaugh, had three straight playoff years, followed by one non-playoff year and he was let go.

Makes me think of Farhan. He couldn't produce or sign effective players, yet against all odds, his coach misses the playoffs by one game in his first year, then wins the most games in the 137 year history of the franchise. Players fail in the next two years, so of course the manager has to go (although they kept most of his staff in one capacity or another). Too bad the Giants tanked after having been 12 games over .500 and in 3rd place in the NL after 100 games.

The Giants hired a new manager and against all odds, extended Farhan so that they'll both be on the payroll for three more years. They sign one (1) free agent of interest and pay double market value for him after having missed out on the top two free agents for...well, let's just say every year that Farhan has been there. At least they got a manager who couldn't win with eight multi-year All-Stars in the field, another player who finished top-5 in MVP voting twice, and multiple Cy Young winners.

49ers.  How to do it successfully.  Giants. How to do it unsuccessfully.

Maybe you should be a Marlins fan.

I'm not allowed to complain?  

I think I'll stick as a 49ers fan since Brodie and a Giants fan since Mays. I particularly like it when Stanford grads play on the Giants. So I'll stay a fan of Slater, McCaffrey, Beck, etc.
