Pretty interesting to hear Lynch, Fred Warner, and Shanahan all decry a lack of effort from the defense on several plays against Detroit. Personally, while they did not name names, I think a lot of that is being thrown at Chase Young. Who I think had a reputation of taking plays off when he played for Washington. And who did so on at least a couple of plays in the Detroit game. He’s done very little since joining the 49ers. Time to step up. Losing Clelin Ferrell a high effort guy who also is very good against the run, has hurt more than I thought it would.
I like the matchup with Kansas City more than a matchup with the Ravens. With the exception of Mahomes. I think the 49ers can run the ball. I think they’ll have to run the ball. The Chiefs are both very good in the defensive backfield and they put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. Lots of blitz packages. Spagnoulo is a terrific defensive coordinator. He will throw a lot at Purdy.
But the Chiefs have not been particularly stout against the run.
On the other side of the ball, I don’t think the Chiefs present the run threat that either Green Bay or especially Detroit did. Detroit was a very good running football team. Great offensive line and two very good backs. Pacheco is good but I don’t think he’s at the same level of what the 49ers faced against Detroit. Reid will probably mix in some jet sweeps – he had very good success against the 49ers in the past doing that with Mecole Hardman. .
49ers cannot come out of the gate slow. If they fall well behind the Chiefs team, they will not catch up. The Chiefs will not make mistakes.
Top to bottom. I think th 49ers are the better team. Except there’s Mahomes. Not a knock on Purdy, he’s been terrific. But Mahomes is, as Jen York recently said, the best football player on the planet. Kelce he’s going to get his. You’re not gonna stop him. At least try to control him, especially on 3d down. And shut down their other receivers. Rice has been tough. The rest of them very pedestrian.
Speaking of third down – that’s where the Niner defense has been poor this year. Cannot be the case in the Super Bowl.
Take a lead to the fourth-quarter. And do not be in a position where Mahomes has the ball with a chance to win the game at the end.
Should be fun game.
