They forgot that signing a bunch of highly paid athletes doesn’t necessarily equate to creating a cohesive ballclub.  The old saying “25 cabs for 25 players“ was apt in this instance.  

Whose fault?  Well, it wasn’t the manager’s.  It was the general manager’s.  Signing names without regard for fit is a recipe for disaster…….
