Steve Merritt, candidate for 49er defensive coordinator publicly stated it was wrong to fire Steve Wilks because the problem was with the offense, not the defense. He makes some pretty good points BTW, like the 49ers' 3 for 12 third down "success."

The Super Bowl result had nothing to do with the firing of Wilks.  The die was cast long before then.  What Shanahan wanted from his D (front to back) and what Wilks provided (back to front) was the determining  factor.  My guess is that Shanahan thought he would get the Salah/Ryans D and he was wrong so he decided to let Wilks go and find a guy who would coach the D in the manner he desired.

Speaking of which, the Niners have hired inhouse for defensive coordinator. They promoted Nick Sorenson, defensive passing game coordinator. 
They are also hiring Brandon Staley to replace Assistant Head Coach Anthony Lynn, departing for Washington.
