Question for those who follow college hoops outside Stanford more than I do: is there any precedent for firing a coach 10 minutes after a road game, before he's even gotten on the plane much less held the press conference?

I wanted Haase gone as much as anyone, but not waiting until today to do it feels unnecessarily mean in retrospect.  It's not like there was misconduct or something.

Well, about a week ago UW fired its head coach BEFORE he got on the plane to Vegas…

As bad as Muir has been, I’ve got to believe that Haase has already been told long before yesterday. Indeed, the timing of the announcement might very well have been a matter of mutual agreement, allowing him to make his eloquent remarks at the press conference, along with Angel and Jones there to make their tributes as well. Plus, it put an end to all of the media (and fan board) snarky comments sooner than later…

I've thought this from the beginning.  He couldn't be as good a recruiter as he has been if he wasn't a good guy to be around.

After watching, I say hire Haase as AD.  He clearly loves Stanford, he cares about education, he's been around top sports programs as a player and a (assistant) coach.  He probably wants to keep coaching, but he just seems like he'd be a good person to keep around the university.

I agree, 100%.

I've been all for NIL for reasons of simple equity. But the amount of money that fans of major schools are willing to offer college kids is staggering Tom me. Many of you know I follow Kentucky, and have for seven decades, having been born there 77 years ago. This year, UK had two freshman who blossomed unexpectedly, Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham. (Sheppard did so well he is projected as the first pick in the NBA draft, which is ridiculous.) To my amazement, the rumor is that both Sheppard and Dillingham are going to be offered $3,000,000 each to return for their sophomore seasons. And Kentucky is not the leader in NIL exploitation, though it is about to become so. Calipari has plans.

There is no way a Stanford with its llimited and frankly more sophisticated fan base can compete with these numbers. The only solution is to junk amateurism altogether, and allow college kids to sign on with NBA  (and  NFL and MLB) franchises, without losing eligibility. There is no principled reason for the limitation. 

That way, the Stanfords, Vanderbilts, and others with small fan bases. have a fighting chance. Professional franchise money dwarfs NIL, and suddenly playing time becomes important again. The 40 year decision becomes meaningful.
