Tom Davis recruited the class that put Stanford in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 47 years - Todd Lichti, Howard Wright, Bryan McSweeney, Terry Taylor, Scott Meinert.

Montgomery struggled recruiting wise until landing Adam Keefe in his 3rd class. Other players in his early classes (guys like Andy Poppink, Peter Dukes, Marcus Lollie) were not better than the guys who came before. Everything changed for Montgomery (and Stanford) when Brevin Knight arrived in Montgomery's 8th season.

Montgomery's strength for the 1st half of his Stanford career was making a competitive team out of mostly 3 star guys. But it's really tough to find someone with that skill set who can work within Stanford's extremely strict admissions standards.

Yes it is very hard, and that is going to make a number of bigger name coaches lose interest, particularly since there probably will not be a commensurate amount of salary for the challenge.
