Here are six key reasons why this happened:
1. too many personal fouls by our two key bigs, leading them to play only 45 minutes combined
2. insufficient speed and quickness by our guards on D
3. poor shooting by our point guard and non-starters (3 for 21)
4. too many turnovers (14 for SU to 7 for NCS)
5. too few foul shots (7 for SU [all by Kiki] and 19 by NCS), because of few drives to the hoop by Stanford perimeter players, combined with...
6. dismal three-point shooting (5 for 25 for SU [20%] compared with 7 for 17 for NCS [41%])
Underscores the big drop-off from Cam & Kiki to our guards; so many talented guards playing in another uniform that could have alleviated some of the pressure off of them.
!. An issue resulting from out guard play. We couldn't stop opposing guards from taking it to the basket and eventually drawing fouls.
1,2,3, and 6 pretty much due to our poor guard play. Some turnovers came from Cam and Kiki, but mostly when they tried to make up for the lack of anyone else doing anything.
Defenses could play off our guards and sag in to make passes inside harder since there wasn't a big risk of someone going off from 3.
The immense talent of Cam and Kiki won us the Pac 12 and got us to the Sweet 16. With more average players we might not have made the tournament.
As has been mentioned elsewhere, I can't keep thinking that there is something about our system that is unattractive to the types of guards we really need.
I am concerned who we will have next year offensively besides Kiki. We won't be able to play pass the ball to Kiki on every possession. There are young players who are supposed to have a lot of talent, but if they are that good why didn't we see them this season?
