Yesterday, I predicted that Stanford's football team would win at least five games (over/under is 3.5) during its inaugural ACC season, in part because I was thinking about body clock performance. Four of Stanford's opponents are coming from the Eastern time zone and will likely kick off the games at 10:30 p.m. body clock time, and a fifth is coming from the Central time zone.
On July 4, 2015, I took my youngest to a Giants vs. Nationals game, the opening game of a road trip for the Giants. To accommodate parking for fireworks, the Nationals got the starting time of the game moved back to 11:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. body clock time for the Giants. First pitch was actually 11:24. I told my son, prepare for the Giants to get slaughtered...which happened. Baumgarner started and his first six pitches were as follows: home run, double, strike, ball, home run, single. He then got two outs on warning-track flyballs. Giants lost 9-3.
Today, the first pitch is at 9:30 a.m. body clock time. Pittsburgh is pitching Paul Skenes, their phenom. He's had two starts, he's 1-0, has a 2.70 ERA. 18 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched. Might be a rough day for the Giants. On the other hand, Stanford's Erik Miller gets the start. Lineup: Matos, Wade, Estrada, Chapman, Soler, Yaz, Ramos, Casali and Wisely.
Separately, after 30 games, the Giants are averaging 32,850 per home game, which projects to home attendance of 2.66 million. Better than last year's 2.51 million, so...progress. The team is more interesting, and if they get over .500, perhaps they'll do a smidge better. I'll see them on 6/16 (rather than watch the finals of the U.S. Open).
