I recall at the time that in the immediate aftermath of Carrington’s injury, it wasn’t expected to be season ending, and the coaches seemed to think she’d be back in the lineup pretty quickly. As the season progressed and Carrington had not returned, I remember seeing her on the sidelines in street clothes looking oddly disconnected from the team. At times, she seemed to be displaying bad attitude.
As the season progressed, the coaches’ statements on her situation got more and more circumspect and at times, brusque. We may never know the real story about what happened, but it seemed fairly obvious that Carrington was unhappy both about her playing time and how she was being used, i.e. that she wasn’t being allowed to feature on offense. Carrington had that Jordan Poole-like ability to hit ridiculous shots AND make Jordan Poole-like turnovers. My observation at the time was that she was on a fairly short leash compared to, say, Kiana Williams, who didn’t get benched when she was having a bad shooting night. I infer that Carrington figured out that she could take a redshirt injury year and transfer somewhere where her offensive style would be a better match, and that decision burned some bridges with the coaches.
It’s a weird situation. I appreciate that the Stanford coaches are very tight-lipped about internal problems and don’t broadcast them as we’ve seen in other programs. So, at times, you have to interpret the silence accordingly.
