Overall, a good day. Dumping some vets, opening up space for some young guys and slashing salary to put themselves in a better position in 2025.  all good.  Well done, Zaidi. 

Plus a local guy, Mark Canha, comes home on an expiring contract.

Glad the young guys are going to get to play. I'd really like to see Luciano and Birdsong take root.

Separately, really like the Canha family. He played in our local Little League, also played at Bellarmine and Cal.

Mark's not having a great year, but he replicates what Soler was doing. Has a strong eye, OBP of .337 this year, .348 career. Gets HBP a lot (11 this year), still has pretty good wheels as a 35 year old. 1B, DH, corner outfield, PH.

Bobby Bonds for Bobby Mercer. 2nd worse
Worse George Foster for Frank Duffy and Vern Geishert

Giants traded HoFer Rogers Hornsby for IF Jimmy Welsh in 1927. The next season, Welsh hit .248 and played in 38 games. Hornsby let the NL in BA (.387), OBP (.498), SLG (.632), OPS (1.130), and walks (107). 188 hits, 42 doubles 7 triples, 21 HRs, 94 RBIs. Struck out 41 times.

To get Hornsby, the Giants had traded HoFer Frankie Frisch and a pitcher named Ring. After the trade, Frisch finished 2nd in MVP balloting the next yea and again a few years later and won the MVP four years later. He also played in the first three all star games.

A double trade that just sucked.

Best trade...Giants had a dominant pitcher named Amos Rusie who had five straight seasons of 30+ wins. Rusie's arm was failing, and the Giants' owner agreed to trade him to the Reds for a 20 year old pitcher named Christy Mathewson. Rusie pitched three more games, then retired. Mathewson won 373 games and was a member of the first Hall of Fame class. Despite the fact that the New York media roasted the Giants for trading Rusie, that trade turned out pretty well...

Canha is hitting .231 with seven home runs, 42 walks and 79 strikeouts across 93 games in 2024, his 10th MLB season. His .350 on-base percentage is the lowest mark of his career since 2018. - Detroit Free Press.

Don't like the moves at all. . . .

Mark needs to be a platoon vs. LHP, when this year he hit .286/.400/.457 (140 wRC+), .349xwOBA, 45.3% hard hit% and 9.4% barrel. Numbers vs. RHPs are much worse.
