Somebody needs to update the Wikipedia medal count.   Note the asterisks on Stanford's medal count and that is without Heiden's and Gu's medals from the Winter Olympics in the current count.    Include those and we have clearly passed usc in total medals and gold medals.   What a fantastic result for Stanford Olympians in Paris!    It might be time for a "bootleg" t-shirt to come out to commemorate such a great performance.

Even without Gu's medals Stanford is now ahead in gold, because USC claims only 7 this cycle.   And tied in overall because USC claimed 15 which is conveniently 24 less than 39. 

USC should not claim most overall gold at this point.
And really USC should not even claim most overall medals as Gu had plans to attend Stanford when she won her Beijing medals.
I believe Gu attended frosh orientation in 2022, but I am not sure if she is still attending Stanford.

Farm, those numbers are on wikipedia, and as noted, do not currently include either Heiden or Gu in the count.   I agree with your counts, but unfortunately the Stanford AD takes an even more conservative approach.  I'm not sure why?  U$c and most other schools take the opposite tact and lay claim to all potential athlete ties.  The wikipedia page is fairly comprehensive (save for Heiden and Gu).   

Stanford AD has finally started to understand the power of the Olympics to create more fans (and likely more donations), so I'm hopeful that they will start to put more focus on Stanford as the Olympic student athlete training ground.   This year's microsite was a step in the right direction, but as others pointed out, $c has done a better job of this.  Love the WSJ article - we should make PR hay while we can!

someone (maybe Bobk) once wrote here that the AD didn't previously count Heiden or Debi Thomas as their sports were not sports that the AD supports (same rationale would apply for Gu).

Thanks Eric, that was me that provided the update that was given by one of the AD staff members.   I do think that the AD could note that Heiden (BS and MD), Thomas (BS), Gu (current student) and potentially other alums participated in the Winter Olympics, as other schools do.    I think the engagement by both alums and the AD has been significant with the Paris games, so I'm hoping we see a change in how the AD presents this information going forward.

Yes, it seems odd to restrict alumni representation to those that received direct training in their field. Herbert Hoover was a geology major, not poli sci...should he not be listed as an alumnus because President does not naturally flow from a Geology degree?
