Of course when one reads the following link one realizes that FPV drones controlled via fiber optics have been in military use since the 1990s

The above article does point out why the Hellfire is in general a "better" weapon. The argument to use the FPV missiles was weak if sufficient Hellfires were available and therefore the US did not pursue it beyond the development phase. All fiber guided missiles/drones have an inherent  very serious range limitation due to the ability to spool out fiber. Eventually the fiber becomes too heavy and breaks, causing the missile to "go dumb". Obviously the length of fiber that can be carried is not infinite but the mechanical stress limit is usually the limiting factor. No point in carrying more cable than that.
