I'm told from someone who regularly plays golf with Bayless that his television persona is not reflective of how he is in private.

I can't recall who wrote this, but it was either a fellow, older writer; an editor or Bayless's first boss who claimed that Bayless specifically selected this persona to maximize his long-term income. Looks like it worked. Probably worked for a variety of similar writers; e.g., Glenn Dickey and Lowell Cohn. Lowell's kid, Grant, is doing his level best to replicate what his father did.
