How would you grade the main free agents of 2024? My thoughts:
Nick Ahmed. Hit .232, no power, let go. .581 OPS. Grade: F
Mark Canha. 32 games as late season pickup; .288/.376/.329/705. Inexpensive. Grade: A-
Matt Chapman. Short-term deal with opt-out, best fWAR in the league behind Ohtani, relatively affordable $151 mms./6 year deal. Grade: A
Jerar Encarnacion. Cheap replacement for Soler. .248/.277/.425/.702. Grade: C-
Jordan Hicks. Paid like a reliever, had a chance to start, hit the innings wall. Threw third most innings on the team, 4.10 ERA, 4.37 FIP. Not many strikeouts (96 in 10B-.2 innings) despite his arm strength. Still just 27. C+ for this year.
Spencer Howard. 2 starts, 7 games, 5.63 ERA, 3.88 WHIP. Grade: F.
Jung Hoo Lee. BA .262, .310 OBP. Thought he was turning the cover. No power, no base stealing. Still, struck out only 13x. 0.3 WAR, $7.8 mms. this year with $18 mms. transfer fee. Grade: D for this year.
Tom Murphy. 34 ABs, hurt, -0.4 WAR, .211. At least he had terrible defense. Grade: F.
Robbie Ray. 3-2 in seven starts, came back late, 4.70 ERA, but with borderline amazing 1.141 WHIP. Grade Incomplete.
Blake Snell. 1/2 season terrible, 1/2 season unhittable. $32 mms., will out opt. 3.12 ERA, best among starters. Lost a draft pick to get him. Grade: B-
Jorge Soler. 93 games, underperformed all career averages slightly. Actually did very well in the 49 games for Atlanta. 12 Hrs for SF. Grade: B.
Overall grade: D-. May revise if Lee, Hicks, Chapman, Canha, Snell, Encarnacion, Ray all work out.
