as far as why the meeting transpired the way it did.......difficult to know for sure. the simplest explanation for the president's refusal to criticize putin would be that the latter has some dirt on him, but there's no proof of that, and there probably never will be. another explanation would be that trump respects other strong leaders. or maybe he believes that he can get a better deal for russian minerals, since russia has been selling them on the cheap. who knows.
