Russia wants the US to force Ukraine into giving them territories that are still controlled by Ukraine and that Russia does not have the near term ability to capture.
Ukraine, obviously, is not on board with that. The US doesn't really have much leverage to force Ukraine into that, and Ukraine rightly doesn't trust any US "security guarantees". So instead of the war being over in 24 hours as promised, the US will take their ball(missiles) and go home.
