Nicely done, skip! Both are correct.
It took almost 51 years (technically 50 years and 360 days) between when Walter Johnson scored his 3,000th strikeout in 1923 and Bob Gibson got his 3,000th in July 1974.
Kind of an interesting distribution of 3,000th strikeouts:
* There was Walter Johnson all alone in 1923
* 9 pitchers got their 3,000th strikeout between 1974 and 1986 (Bert Blyleven)
* Then no one got their 3,000th strikeout for over a decade; Roger Clemens broke the drought in 1998
* Six pitchers got their 3,000th strikeout over the ensuing 10 years ending when John Smoltz got his 3,000th in 2008.
* Then another 10+ year drought, that ended when C.C. Sabathia got his 3,000th in 2019.
* Over the last 6 years starting with Sabathia, four pitchers have thrown their 3,000th strikeout (Sabathia, Verlander, Scherzer, and now Kershaw)
