Well, if the objective was to drain the Russian military of men and materiel then that goal has been accomplished. The world has seen that three years in Russia hasn't been able to vanquish a bordering country, establish air superiority, or even incrementally advance without falling back on WW2 era mass artillery and WW1 era trench warfare.
As always, getting OUT of a war is much harder than getting into one, whether you are a combatant or providing support. Sometimes there is no "right" answer but there are many, many wrong ones.
