So I will speculate. He may have thought that he had a better chance to improve on (or recover from) his mediocre freshman year somewhere else.

It's certainly possible that Kim's transfer might have nothing to do with Stanford or his frosh year results. He is from Altadena, CA. I don't know if his family was affected by the fires. Maybe he just wants to be closer to home.
His freshman scoring average, while the 14th best all time for a freshman at Stanford, was a stroke higher than his fellow frosh TK Chantananuwat and Jay Leng. And Kim did not finish in the top 20 of any full field event.
