Lefty Grove

Shoot, I said Lefty Gomez, I meant Lefty Grove.

Lefty Gomez wasn't a bad guess -- he was a 2-time ERA leader.

He was a good pitcher, and an SFBA native. Went to Richmond HS and played for the Seals.

The only thing I remember about Lefty Gomez is that he's part of an obscure trivia question: Which Hall of Fame pitcher struck out five future Hall of Fame players in a row (in the 1934 All Star game). Answer was Carl Hubbell, who struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. He also struck out a sixth Hall of Famer in Lefty Gomez, but then Gomez was a pitcher and a terrible hitter (fifth worst in history with 1,000+ plate appearances), so...not that big a deal. Valenzuela tied that record by striking out Mattingly, Ripken, Barfield, Whitaker and Teddy Higuera in succession.

Gomez could pitch. Made seven All-Star teams in a row -- probably would have been nine if they had the All-Star game in 1931 when he went 21-9 or 1932 when he went 24-7 (and finished 5th in MVP balloting). He led the AL in strikeouts 3x.

Odd trivia: Gomez and Grove each threw three innings in the 1933 All-Star game.
