We have seen forecasts of problems for the Russian economy for at least two years. However, both world economic events and increased US sanctions do appear to be taking their toll. I still don't think Putin is going to settle for anything less than the totality of Ukraine, but he may have to at least appear willing to do so to get sanctions lifted. IMO it is absolutely critical that, at a minimum, NO sanction relief whatsoever be granted until the full cease-fire agreement is negotiated and signed by all concerned. Putin will squeeze Ukraine for all its worth during this negotiating process. Rewarding him before he has actually delivered anything is very unwise.
