I was traveling on Sunday, so didn't read the CardBoard until after I watched the game. Some of today's early CardBoard comments were, uh well, familiar echoes.
Many people have made comments I agree with about the game (and the posts) so I'll avoid repeating those.
Isn't it nice to have competing assertions about who was the player of the game? Nah, that must be due to the individuals and not the coaches.
Personally, I like Ijiwoe coming in off the bench to change the pace of the play. To the opponents, it must be sorta like when a single player has very different gears.
I want to caution people to temper their impression of Eschmeyer's play late in the game because the opponents are going to play differently when they have a number of fouls. It seemed she played much better today than I've seen her before.
Some interesting & perhaps surprising stats:
The most positive +/- were: Ogden: 14; Somfai & Leopolo: 10
The most negative +/- was: Clardy: -7
Ijiwoe: +1
(NOTE: Q5 stats show the Q4 stats. Something is not right.)
In most basketball games, there are many, many fouls that aren't called. So to say "those were fouls" is a bit hollow without pointing out other fouls that weren't called. At least twice, fouls were called on Stanford players after the NC post hooked them with her arm to put them behind her and clear a path to the basket. Last I looked at the rules, that was a foul.
Antonelli pointed out that Clardy's last second attempt at a basket in Q4 was to avoid the chance for NC to get a rebound & a timeout to advance the ball. When the ball left her hand, there was 0.4 seconds on the clock. In looking at the play, I see how that play can work either for a made FG or for a foul called on the post coming across to help discourage the shot. Even if Clardy had been charged with an offensive foul, NC at best gets the ball (in their end) with 0.3 seconds on the clock. Good clock management & play calling.
Is it a statistical oddity that Stanford has drawn Chuck Gonzalez as a ref 4 times in a 7 game span? All in consequential games.
