The question would remain: are the reconstituted Pac-12, MWC, Big West, or WCC going to provide a better home? Would the athletes that Stanford has been lucky enough to attract still want to play for what might become the west coast version of Rice?

Exactly.
And the question is more complicated because unless your name is Domers, and maybe a few other schools, all your biggest spectator sports move together, or not, to a new conference.  So while we could debate about what conference is best for Stanford WBB, it's unlikely to move alone without FB, MBB, and numerous other sports teams going there too. If it did somehow move alone, is likely to be the kiss of death for any hope of any national competitiveness or relevance.
