Are there any recent examples of a school playing WBB or MBB outside its primary conference? Chicago State has played as an independent, I think.

I guess it depends on how you define primary conference.  Does Notre Dame fit that description? (LOL)  UConn is also football independent with the other sports in the Big East.  And recently, Sac State announced a football-only affiliation with the MAC (Mid-American Conference), with most of the other sports going to the Big West conference.  Army, Navy, UMass, Missouri State, Kennesaw State, Villanova, Northern Illinois, UC-Davis, North Dakota State, Sacred Heart, and William & Mary all have football affiliations different from the rest of their athletic department.

My understanding is that it would be difficult to impossible for a Stanford team to not compete in the ACC conference if the ACC sponsors that sport. Obviously, ND has a special deal with the ACC. What are the chances that the ACC would let Stanford just pick and choose? Certainly not in the most significant sports.
