If I recall that game correctly, another possible factor was the unexpected physicality of Mississippi SEC basketball.  Stanford did not seem ready for that physicality.  In the years since, officials rewarding physicality and indirectly punishing finesse teams like Stanford, seems to have only grown.

And as Betts and Jones discussed, rather, laughed about it on Jones's podcast, they just didn't care.

It was the toughest year of Tara's coaching career. It was why she immediately brought in a consultant from KBS who worked with the coaches and players prior to them going away for the summer and throughout the season.
