he was and he was picked by Jobs, Sculley in a power struggle got the board to take away Jobs operating responsibilities and Jobs then left to start Next, which was not commercially successful, Apple later bought Next in 1996 and got Jobs back, the underlying Next tech became their core operating system. Cook came to Apple in 1997 from Compaq and became CEO in 2011.
