Interesting story from the Germany game, where captain Kimmich was looking for someone to take their last kick, and multiple players, including veteran Leon Goretzka, a midfielder with 15 goals for Germany, declined. Tah, a central defender who has never taken a PK in a game, stepped up and missed.

IMHO, this is a failure of coaching. The coach should have a list, and the players should expect a shootout is possible and be prepared for it.

PKs are so entertaining because of the stakes, and IMHO because you can see a player's face before the kick and know he will miss. When Kluivert for the Netherlands and Woltemade for Germany stepped up, I predicted both misses to my wife. You could tell they were nervous and not locked in.

Perhaps Goretzka was always going to be shook and miss. But the failure is ultimately on the coach not preparing his squad.

Netherlands playing for PKs is another coaching failure IMHO given their atrocious shootout record, though perhaps a bit more defensible as Morocco honestly looked the more dangerous side.
