Warren has decent awareness, and aside from (or maybe evidenced by) the intentional grounding penalty, he should get some credit for no sacks on the game, as I did see the Stanford offensive tackles losing some blocks. Nice job. But he did overthrow some guys, and guys dropped at least two crucial passes on him, and he did burn a worm with one pass. Room to improve, but I think he did fine. When last season's natl champ runner-up defense comes to play next week, we'll see what that praise is worth. I think he'll be okay if the OL can hold their own. Credit to Warren for standing tall and finishing passes in the face of pressure as well.
The defense had a harder time stopping the Hawai'i quick slant passing offense, and they carved us up a bit. There was less emphasis on pass rush in the second half of the game, iirc, and that hurt. Maybe that was the response to the quick pass offense. Certainly not getting as much rest after the offense started stalling (after losing Kilstrom) hurt the defense.
Stanford seemed to win the game on two hold-your-breath replay reviews. Not a great place to be in where the referees decide your fate, but things worked out this time. Have to do better to control our destiny.
Defense came up big with the forced fumbe (Zach Rowell) and subsequent fumble recovery for TD (Tafiti). I appreciate the hesitation as he considered downing the ball inside the five yard line to maintain possession...would have been okay either way imo. And the Stanford commitment to run defense clearly never wavered and paid off with that backfield hit. Secondary got carved up in the second half though...if Hawai'i can do that, so can the rest of the ACC.
Special teams came up big with the punt block for safety. Great job to shed the block up front and get in the ball's trajectory by Charlie Eckhardt I think. Almost downed a punt at the half yard line but for some toes over the end zone plane!
Blackburn had a bit of a coming out party at one point (which was great), but where was that the rest of the game? Also, was he the one who dropped the pass that would have been a TD? Rough drop, whoever that was. Let's get back to TE University game-planning!
JonAnthony Hall had some nice YAC moves...well done. The WR corps in general looked nice. Let's hope they rise to the level of ACC competition.
