I don't think Bernie could have done anything to keep Katie from leaving. See article. She's had 4 coaches for 4 Olympics, and has apparently done well at Florida. She reportedly still has a great relationship with Meehan. It's an individual sport and what individuals need and want can change over time. It will be interesting to see whether she goes elsewhere to train for L.A. The detailed, interesting profiles in The Athletic of Regan Smith and Torri Huske are worth reading. Torri Huske is taking a gap year and trained at Stanford under Meehan for Paris and has done well, after a year of floundering when she was taking a heavy load of classes. Regan Smith left Stanford for Arizona State's Pro group (giving up NCAA eligibility) because Stanford was simply not a good fit for her in and out of the pool, and her times showed it. That was obviously a good move for her.
