One reason to keep ND on the schedule is that the alternative of scheduling "Other Power 5" schools has not gone too well in the past. Most other schools are looking to schedule somebody they can beat during their "non-conference" games. Stanford is double trouble on that score because of late we have been pretty good, but don't have the reputation as a "football power". There is too much risk and not enough reward to schedule Stanford. Stanford OTOH needs to attract fans and overcome the perception the PAC-12 is a "weak" conference (in many people's eyes). Playing Indiana won't do that. So, despite the risks, ND is a good fit for us.

There's always the "end the year in California" thing, but they can get that with whoever. I think the real reason is that they get to pretend that they're our peer institution. I loved this from yesterday's "Why Your Team Sucks":

Johns Hopkins rivals Georgetown and Notre Dame for the gap between how impressed with itself it is and how unimpressed everyone else is by it.

I'm not familiar with Hopkins and Georgetown but boy do I love that description of Notre Dame.

I've said this for many years.  As soon as ND starts believing that we are their equal or better in football, they will drop us for a less competitive team.  Their history with USC is extensive so I think they will keep them on the schedule but I am sure they would prefer to have the other West Coast team be an easier team to beat than us.  I think that they have so much over confidence in their program and keep expecting us to revert to the mean so it will be a few years before they really get sick of losing more games than they win and drop us.

I think ND schedules Stanford because of academics. ND respects Stanford.  ND wants to be a serious academic institution. It competes against Stanford recruiting wise. So I think ND gets every bit if not more out of the relationship.
