That has never been the approach at U$C. $C has mostly tried to be a balanced, traditionally pro-style offense. For many-a-recent-year they were the most similar in the conference as Stanford as to their approach on offense. Helton has taken that approach, though this year they were passing at a greater rate than the last two years.

If UCF beats LSU they could enter next year ranked in the top 10 (they were in the 20's this year, but that was after losing Scott Frost). They'll have gone undefeated for two straight years. If we beat Pitt and can manage Northwestern and USC next year we'll likely be top-20.

I don't think anyone cares about BYU, and Oklahoma vs UCLA won't be a draw because Oklahoma will annihilate UCLA. It depends on what the other conferences put up.

1) Are we the only team in the country whose entire schedule includes nothing but Power 5 conference games and currently ranked non-conference opponents? I'm guessing the answer is yes and that there are very few teams even playing 10 or 11 such games. For reference, Alabama's non-conference schedule includes Duke, New Mexico State, Southern Miss and Western Carolina. So their number is 8 vs. our 12. (I'm not comparing Stanford to Alabama, or the Pac 12 to the SEC. But c'mon ya big bullies, go pick on someone your own size!) 
 
2) UCF has only two Power-5 games on their schedule next season, Stanford and Pitt. One way or another, they'll be playing the 2018 Sun Bowl champion.

And if we're lucky enough to have a shot at the Pac 12 CCG, it won't affect our status one way or the other. 

5) I agree that replacing Utah and ASU with Colorado and Arizona is a big help. But it doesn't come close to making up for replacing SDSU and UCD with UCF and Northwestern!

That schedule is BRUTAL.

Even aside from the quality of the teams, Orlando the first week of September.  Not only is it hot and humid that time of year, there could also be a hurricane that postpones a game. Then, at the end of the year, Colorado and WSU in November on the road back to back weeks could be really bad weather.

No team will have a tougher 4 games to open their season. David Shaw will have to be better than this year just to equal this year, and way better to get to conference title contention.

It is very difficult to make the College Football Playoff. It requires an incredibly talented team, some lucky bounces and a favorable schedule. It is something that I hope to see Stanford do at some point in my lifetime. However, as long as we keep scheduling like this, it is virtually impossible.

My biggest disappointment in the playoff committee, and the NY6 committee, so far, is that they have consistently rewarded the SEC for scheduling 5 byes each season.  The majority of the SEC starts the season with 4 wins in the bank and must win two league games to become bowl eligible.

My biggest disappointment in the playoff committee, and the NY6 committee, so far, is that they have consistently rewarded the SEC for scheduling 5 byes each season.  The majority of the SEC starts the season with 4 wins in the bank and must win two league games to become bowl eligible.
