I think it's just stochastic. Unlike the OSUs and Alabamas and Clemsons of the world we can't just replace 5 stars with 5 stars, it's all about what guys can qualify, who of those want to come here, and who of those successfully make the transition. When Saban has a 4* senior who never makes the jump he just replaces him with a younger 4*, we can't always do that. And even then those teams have holes that make them vulnerable to the right program.

Plus, as you point out, depth is a big issue, especially with our current self-imposed roster limits. If a blue-blood has a 4* DL go down, oh well, now that 5* freshman gets more time. If it happens to us it can be completely devastating, and there's not a lot we can do about it because we're more reliant on getting guys and coaching them up than "we have more talent than you". Not that the coaching up doesn't happen at the other schools, it's just that it's easier to handle the random injuries when you're raking in the best talent every single year, rather than having bumper years and lean years.

Of course, there's probably some amount of "blame" to place on the staff for how they handle the situation once the players are in the building, but it's not like the coaches we have here haven't fielded damn good units in the past, so I don't know how much stock to put into that. Agree with your last statement.  I guess my point was that there is no reason to believe that the talent we do get wouldn't be distributed evenly between the offense and defense.  In other words, why would we have one year where all the talent is concentrated on the offense but the defense is poor, and another year where the special talent is on defense, and the offense is poor.  Wouldn't the most likely scenario be that the talent is divided between the two, and we have a good but not great offense and a good but not great defense?

Right, that's what I mean about it being stochastic. You wouldn't necessarily expect it to alternate the way that it has (2011 O better, 2012-2014 D better, 2015 O better, 2016/2017 more even) but the amount that we depend on seniors marinating in the system and developing into better players leaves us a bit more vulnerable to random turndowns (or ups) than the other programs that have as many 2010's wins as we do (which, believe it or not, is basically just the blue bloods).

Luckily the cavalry are coming (but likely a year too late); the 5 frosh are all pretty beefy already, Pease has garnered praise and is the first frosh walk-on OL to actually play in a game since who even knows when, and the '20 OL class is already in pretty good shape.

Me three.  I just watched his highlights last night. He's listed at 6-2 207, which is great size for a Safety.  Physically I'm sure he is ready to play, so the question is can he learn his role on defense fast enough to play a lot as a True Frosh.

We saw what happened with Horrible Harry as a freshman forced to play (and they were roughly the same size coming in). Thomas Booker, the exception, had about 20lbs on him at this stage. Now if he can push the other possible rotational guys (in likely order: Schaffer, Johnson, Peek, Boles?) that's certainly a win.

I don’t know... if Sinclair moves out to safety, moving DiCosmo to OLB changes one gap for another.  Generally our two-class haul at OLB is fine even if Herron is the only outside backer in his class (though that does upgrade the importance of getting more in the class of 2020).

Perhaps this has been reported elsewhere, and I am totally out of touch, but sophomore Kendall Williamson and senior J.J. Parson are now listed as safeties.

Interesting move that suggests that the coaches are bullish on one or more of the true freshman CBs given that this is likely Paulson Adebo's last year on the team. Moreover, since we play in nickel so often, I wonder who is tagged to play there. I always assumed it was Williamson since our nickel is almost always a CB. But perhaps it will still be Williamson as a safety.

At any rate, despite some positive comments about Stuart Head, I'm guessing that Williamson will start at safety opposite Antoine, though I will wait for confirmation.

Also, as I guessed long ago, freshman Jonathan McGill is now listed solely as safety. And none of the remaining CBs are listed as "cornerback/safety."

Also, senior Henry Hattis is now listed as a guard. Did not see that coming at all.

Interesting move that suggests that the coaches are bullish on one or more of the true freshman CBs given that this is likely Paulson Adebo's last year on the team. Moreover, since we play in nickel so often, I wonder who is tagged to play there. I always assumed it was Williamson since our nickel is almost always a CB. But perhaps it will still be Williamson as a safety.

At any rate, despite some positive comments about Stuart Head, I'm guessing that Williamson will start at safety opposite Antoine, though I will wait for confirmation.

Also, as I guessed long ago, freshman Jonathan McGill is now listed solely as safety. And none of the remaining CBs are listed as "cornerback/safety."

Also, senior Henry Hattis is now listed as a guard. Did not see that coming at all.

Some thoughts on Williamson and Hattis...

My belief was Williamson would be moved to Safety this year, based on the reps he got at CB last year, and his High School vids. This weekend I read a Rivals story indicating how well Williamson is performing at Safety during these August practices. Williamson is too physical of a player for CB IMO. His desire to hit and be a ball hawk is better suited for Safety.

Hattis being moved to Guard is probably as much based on an assumption/hope that he isn't needed at Tackle, because of how well Walter Rouse looks as a Frosh, as Hattis being a permanent Guard. He can play Tackle if need be.

There is now some evidence for why Shaw feels good about the OL. If you consider Rouse and Bragg as superior to your average True Frosh OL, it actually looks like there might actually be enough OL depth to get through a season provided low (not no) injury attrition.

You might have a Top 8 OL of Little, Sarrel, Dalman, Hamilton, Powell, Hattis, Rouse, Bragg. Most college programs try to identify their 7 best OL and play them the majority of time.  If Stanford has 8 guys they feel comfortable with, that's actually decent depth, if not overall numbers of available bodies.

Sophomore Jacob Mangum-Farrar and senior Curtis Robinson are new faces at inside linebacker taking us to athletically exciting places, after four seniors graduated from last year’s team. Both players redshirted last year (Curtis then at outside linebacker) and they can flash in ways that may remind you of Shayne Skov. Senior Andrew Pryts has also impressed with his level of mastery of the defense, after having moved from safety.

Robinson has already been pencilled in, but you wonder if JMF becomes the other ILB starter.
