I'd vote for Posey. The non-candidate that intrigues me is Bill Freehan. Good, not great numbers. 200 HRs, only behind Berra and Bill Dickey for AL catchers. Only led the league in getting HBP three times. But he was an 11-time All-Star, five time gold glove winner, finished in top 7 in MVP voting three times. Held the career fielding percentage record, total chances and total putout records for catchers until 2002. Isn't that the definition of a Hall of Famer? Someone who is the best at their position while they were in the big leagues?

Howard is another of those “close” guys. MVP, three times over .300, versitle and a winner. But not great.
Funny, looking at the baseball register Mission High SF grads like Triandos and Judnich have Mission High of Fremont listed on their bios. I called attention through an email last year and they replied but did nothing.
As for Orteig big mistake by the Seals. Tornay was a worst hitter than you were. The Angels had the Tappe brothers and Vinnie Smith was in Sacramento but Orteig was the best catcher who never made it to MLB.

Fred Lynn's stats were pretty close to Jim Rice's. Rice had one more great year, Lynn had four subpar years (instead of Rice's three) at the end of his career.
And of course he was a USC grad. So he shouldn't be in anyway...:D

I think you forget how good he was. Catching has destroyed his bat – don’t know if it will come back. He’s an elite catcher defensively now. Far from it at the plate. (I find it almost painful to watch him hit now) But he is the best catcher of his generation and the mainstay of a three-time champion. He is a Hall of Famer
