Great marketing programs make the product a must have or a must see. Quality of course is important, but in the case of college football, quality is more than just wins and losses.
Stanford has one of the best business schools in the world. One would think the local talent could create an event and atmosphere that is a must attend.
Marketing? All well and good (and I say this after a 40-year marketing career) BUT ya gotta have a drop-dead, irresistible product, first and foremost, something that Stanford football is decidedly NOT today. For myriad reasons. All the university's horses and all the university's egg-headed Mensa-men (and women, hello Condie Rice) are helpless in this predicament. Suggestion: Put whatever money you're wasting on marketing to work in the recruiting effort. It certainly would not hurt.
Not necessarily advertising programs like "Next Starts Now", but make the game day whole experience something special. Market the experience. Something that attracts the casual fan and or families. Free game day tailgate BBQ with a family plan, play catch with former Stanford greats, skill games, etc. Granted it's for the Super Bowl, but the NFL has done a great job with the NFL Experience. We only have six games, so something similar could still be special and fun. . . .
One other suggestion, is to do something about the scheduling. Each year these days, we have two or three games at home before the students are even back on campus.
