before we get all comfortable and uppity in NorCal, I have noticed that lots of people are ignoring the mask rules. Went hiking this afternoon with my daughter in the Berkeley hills (Tilden) and a good 1/2 the people had no masks. Not on, and not on their person.

I was out for a walk last night without a mask.  No one around, but that didn't stop people in two different cars from slowing down and yelling at me... ;)

Los Angeles County currently fails that test. Over the last two weeks, officials have confirmed 17,590 new cases, which amounts to 174.2 per 100,000.

Wow, doubling every month.  Why, in a year, that's an increase of over 4,000x.  If it could be sustained that long, that would amount to 2/3 of the population of the US having COVID-19 in Los Angeles County alone,  by the end of May 2021.

Orange County is just as exponential, just smaller.

I can only speak for myself, but I haven't said anything here because (a) I'm totally emotionally worn down and dismayed by the past week; and (b) what I'd say would be 98% political and 2% about the virus. Mindful of the Terry Rule, it just didn't seem worth it. 

I will say this though: between the pandemic and our utterly vacant leadership ("where are you?"), it's beginning to feel like we live in a failed state -- to the point that several of my international Stanford undergrad friends from "developing" countries have reached out to ask if the U.S. is going to be OK. It's dismaying to answer I'm really not sure at the moment.

Interestingly, given the truly harsh things repeatedly directed at church goers and peaceful protesters a few weeks back, virtually nothing has been mentioned here about the more recent activities.  Perhaps we have a growing consensus that First Amendment rights are more worthy of consideration during the pandemic than previously admitted.

Indoors vs. outdoors.  Evidence for outdoor transmission is quite minimal at this point.  That could change after the protests, but we don't know yet.

And I've seen lots and lots written with concerns about virus transmission among protestors.  Even the liberal NY Times ran an article on that several days back.

Weren't soccer matches key superspreader events in Italy and Spain? I'm not sure what distinguishes a protest from a match, if anything it seems like a protest could be worse. The only potential saving grace is widespread mask usage.

We'll probably start finding out if it's an issue in a few days, maybe a week.

I have a next door neighbor in Santa Clara County, who is having his 2nd multi-family gathering within the last week.  Is that what's going on in L.A.?

Another issue is the fact that protests are events some people come back to day after day, not just a one time event like a soccer match.

Hopefully masks and the relative youth of the protestors reduces the possible risks, but no bueno to have civil unrest in the middle of a pandemic, no sir.

You really need to put liberal in air quotes there, dude. That rag gave "Senator" Tom Cotton a platform to say he believes the United States military should kill American citizens for exercising their First Amendment rights.

Yeah, sorry, that was a bit of sarcasm.  I was a subscriber for over a decade but cancelled last year because of that sort of thing.
