That seems to be a common path now.   Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford all have a rotation plan by academic class to get a limited on-campus experience with every student getting an online option for almost all classes.

I would probably contact a school that was considering me but didn't admit and ask if they would reconsider admission if I enrolled in the fall.  This fall would probably be my best shot at getting into a reach school.  With a lot of people expected to defer till next fall, what does that do to next year's high school seniors.  Are they looking at fewer admissions slots as schools have to contend with all the students who defer from this year?  Do school's expand the 2021 freshman class to cope?

The legal battle is important, but my guess is most schools will quickly create requirements that navigate around this issue.   At UCB the students are trying to do something, at least that was the chyron on FoxNews.   They were using it as a negative, but I saw it as a great solution to an odd way to discourage schools from taking sensible steps to reduce the spread of COVID in the cities and towns near the university.

Consistent with the UCB student idea, I would expect schools will declare things like international students MUST meet with their advisor in person at least once each term for any number of reasons.   Or perhaps a 1 unit class that must be completed on campus.   Presumably international students at some schools will now get priority for the lab-based hybrid classes, for example.

Loads of ways to navigate this one, but the message it sends to the world's best students is to find options other than the USA.

I think COVID is getting used for some very dangerous anti-immigration policies.   The mere idea from this administration will have a negative impact on leading American universities ability to attract and retain the best students and professors from around the world.   And that's just very disappointing.

Our borders are closed, and lots of other nations borders are closed to us. International travel isn't so easy. Flights are not nearly as plentiful as before. Agreed.  I left Wash DC on March 13 and returned to Silicon Valley, but I've stayed on the eastern time zone ever since.  I generally go to bed between 8 and 9 and wake up between 4 and 5.  I don't much care for it, and I find it a burden -- and yes, it's much better than being in the DC metroplex where I didn't own a car -- but I find it just barely livable.  If I had to have regular calls with Asia or EMEA, I couldn't function.
