It isn't up to him. He isn't forcing us to do stupid things. Stay home as much as you can. Social distance when you leave home, and wear a mask when not at home. Not perfect. Won't wipe out the disease. But it will get us back into "reasonable" case numbers. Trump can't force us not to do those things. It is our choice. Always has been.

It isn't up to him. He isn't forcing us to do stupid things. Stay home as much as you can. Social distance when you leave home, and wear a mask when not at home. Not perfect. Derailing vaccine efforts would be somewhat harder, but he certainly could make it more difficult for the developers. I wouldn't be surprised if every day more people stop caring than start caring.   Or rather,  care less than care more.  Fatigue is real.  =(

Yes... same here in California.  We are behind the rest of the country, and for now case counts are reasonable but rising, and one can reasonably project that things will accelerate quickly in a couple weeks.

The 7-day average was over 100,000 cases.  As noted, hospitalizations are close to the totals we saw at earlier peaks; the problem is that cases are still rising, and hospitalizations trail new diagnoses.  I expect we will hit records of hospitalizations next week.

The problem with the inauguration's outdoor events will be that even if people are outside, they are often outside packed tightly in the same location for hours.  It would be better than sitting in a packed indoor concert, but still a bit too risky for an administration that has pledged to use science to get control of COVID.  If the collection of MAGA rallies during the election season lead to 700 deaths then packing a million people into a few outdoor areas in DC feels like it would lead to quite a few deaths.   

If that infamous outdoor parade in Philadelphia is shown as Exhibit A for the dangers of large gatherings for the Spanish Flu, my guess is the Biden administration will not want the Biden Inauguration to become the equivalent for COVID19.

For those unfamiliar with the logistics it is not just the time at the inauguration.   Attendees would also need to take some combination of planes, trains and buses to travel to DC. 

Hard to imagine a COVID task force worried about the rate of spread would support inauguration activities and the related transportation logistics.   Given Biden will have a COVID task force before he has even announced his cabinet, my assumption is the inauguration activities will have far fewer people.

Not as confident about the fate of the balls, since it could be possible to test everyone (24 hours before and then again at the secret service screening gates).   For most normal events that level of testing would be too much of a burden, but those inauguration balls are rather important to the political machinery.

I also agree that we should not have a "traditional" inauguration. Just having a swearing in with minimal attendees will also gloss over the fact Trump undoubtedly will not attend.

I also believe that the celebrations in response to Biden's election are very ill advised. Even if they are "safer than ...<name your activity>", they are not safer than staying home. It seems that  we have a country that believes that if you do the "right thing" 95% of the time, that is enough and you are entitled to do whatever you want the remaining 5% of the time. Agree with Goose.  In addition to the actual risk of the event, there is the message that it sends.  A traditional inauguration sends the message that the social distancing rules are only there when convenient and can be ignored when inconvenient.

As Mick notes, you have to model the behaviors you want the public to follow.

Yes, of course it's months late, but the numbers keep getting worse, so better late than never. Let the constrained inauguration ceremony stand as a symbol of a new national effort.
