Low scoring game with a lot of turnovers. Gritty win. KW got hurt with 30 seconds to go. Final 61-49. We snagged 51 rebounds, and that was the difference.

I had to look that one up (pyrrhic). Let's hope that she isn't hurt too badly. It looked like a high hip or gut shot with a knee.

It was hard to see the injury to Williams but I also am hoping it is a contusion or a cramp and nothing worse. However, watching the trainer and Brink carry her off the court was not a sight that any of us wanted to see. And for it to happen with 30 seconds left seemed especially sad.
OK, now we get to worry about Ki all the way forward to January, since I am sure Tara is not going to alert our January opponents whether or not she will be playing.
My takeaways from this game:
1) Brink is more than skilled--she is proving herself defensively and she has that star-power that comes with players who can execute to their best when it really matters. With the game in doubt into the fourth quarter, she hit 3 buckets and 2/2 free throws to lead our 18 point quarter. And twice she stuffed Onyenwere, on one occasion blocking the shot and swiping it from her. She also rejected what would have been a breakaway layup. She already is fabulous and is maturing as we watch.
2) We did out rebound UCLA, but as far as O boards not so much--they had 15 to our 14. Those 15 O boards and UCLA's advantage in turnovers (7 to 16) allowed them to take a whopping 11 more shots than we did--69 to 58. That did go a long way toward neutralizing our 40% to 29% shooting advantage. So Tara needs her team to work on boxing out and making less risky passes. Do that and this would have been a blowout game.
3) Let's not sell our defense short. We controlled Charisma Osborne and kept her to a measly 3/18. That is an accomplishment. Nor were we terrible on Onyenwere. True she made 19 points, but we pushed her outside a lot where she went 1-7. We also blocked her a couple of times inside. But otherwise she hit everything, which is what stars do. Glad she is graduating.
4) Jones' stat line looks a lot like it did against USC--4/10 shooting, but then there are the 14! rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks. She combine offensive star power that draws the defense to her along with a terrific all around utility game that is unmatched.
5) Finally, I thought to officiating was awful, and I don't been in a lopsided way. I mean that they were allowing wrestling for the ball, grabbing, body checks, etc. to go uncalled. On Fran's dunk, did you see what happened to (was is Lexie or Lacie?) after she tipped the ball to Fran? She took an elbow to the face and went sprawling to the court--no call. I supposed if there had been a call the dunk would not have counted. But that is just one of many examples.

I am glad that our team has now experienced (twice) what it feels like to play in a contested game which they could lose if they slack off. Jones is a rebounding machine. She had 15 tonight, adding 8 points on 4-10 shooting, 3 blocks, and 3 assists. Uncharacteristically, she missed several layups.
Belibi got her second career dunk and had 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 1 steal, and 1 assist.
Solid contributions from Hull (#12), Williams, and Wilson.
Brink keeps getting better. In 16 minutes she had 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 assists. She ended up with only 2 fouls.
Prechtel continues to struggle. She played 9 minutes and recorded 2 points on 1-4 shooting, 1 rebound, and 1 steal.
Our shooting was good in the 1st Q. After that we struggled. We ended up shooting 39.7% from the field and 33.3% from 3.
We won the game despite our relatively cold shooting by outrebounding the Bruins 51-37. Our defense held them to 27.5% shooting from the field and 21.4% from 3.

On the UCLA side, there were 52 contestable rebounds, of which UCLA got 15 (28.8% of contestable rebounds).
On our side, there were only 36 contestable rebounds, of which we got 14 (38.9% of contestable rebounds).
I wouldn't worry too much about UCLA having numerically more offensive rebounds; they had a lot more chances to get an offensive rebound. I don't have the women's basketball numbers, but over the course of a whole season, 29% offensive rebounding percentage would have ranked 80th out of 320 MBB teams, so we could stand to improve our defensive rebounding. An offensive rebounding percentage of 39% is outstanding, and would have been in the top-5 among MBB teams last year.

I was worried about this game. Was it the best the team could have played? Not close but they did what they had to do. Too many turnovers, most from trying a bit too hard to make drives happen, which is sorta how UCLA games tend to go for us. Rebounding was very good overall. We've had trouble with the Bruins on the boards in many recent games. Belibi was very good, which was great to see because it was against good posts with size. Jones had a good game despite not shooting that great. She was a rebounding machine, which she has to be if we play her at the 4, our point 4 as it were. As with Belibi, so it was with Brink, a very good showing against high quality bigs. I thought Lexie was pressing a bit, but she also was probably getting fouled with no call on some of those drives.
Hope Williams is ok. Did not look like a knee or an ankle, more like a hip pointer, which knock wood may be painful now, but should not keep her out long, and we have the long break.
All in all, nice win. Except for a brief 1 point lead, UCLA was behind all game. By 7 or 8 minutes to go, it felt like we had things under control.

I was worried about this game. Was it the best the team could have played? Not close but they did what they had to do. I had so much expectations last year for Prechtel to be a star this season. It hasn't materialized thus far. She seems slow on her feet compared to Brink. So far this season in rebounding and loose balls she is not grabbing and holding onto the ball.

The men's and women's teams are learning to pack light (and the importance of laundry). Can you imagine heading out for a roadie, but then not having access to any of the stuff you may have left behind at school for . . . what? . . . 2 months? More?
The facts that (a) no one has tested positive (yet, knock on wood), and (b) no one has been maimed (or worse) by a teammate due to too much 24/7 interaction . . . are pretty noteworthy.
