It was $20 million+ at one point as recently as 1-2 years ago but closer to $10 million now, which explains why he lasted as long as he did.

Oh, and in July 2019, USC paid UCSD $50 million, and gave an apology, for hiring away an Alzheimer's Disease researcher and his staff via duplicitous means.
USC's previous President was a prodigious fundraiser, or so it was reported. That came in handy.

Well, what is the denominator of coaches fired mid-season (especially outside of USC)?
Moreover, isn't one of the reasons you fire a coach is that they lose to a team perceived as inferior? Helton would likely not have been fired had he lost a game to Oregon. It was precisely because we were not held in very high regard in the CF world (more specifically in the USC wolrd) that it led to Helton being fired. Again, I doubt that Helton is fired if we had been a nationally ranked team fresh off a drubbing of KSU.

An alternative explanation is that Stanford has become a football rival to SC in the last 10 years or so (since 2009 What's Your Deal game) in a way UCLA or Cal isn't (we have consistently been better than UCLA during that time and beaten them all but 1 year during our one losing season in the last decade+). And when you get so thoroughly embarrassed and humiliated by said California rival, and the alums publicly abandon an already unpopular coach with the fanbase, the AD feels the need to make a change, particularly ～1-2 months ahead of the most important early window in recruiting.
I actually think the admin at SC respects Shaw and how competitive we have been through most of his tenure (as well as Jim's before).

Strikes me that a lot of good coaches might not be interested in the circus that is USC football. With all of the turnover and relative lack of success, I just don’t think it’s as good a job as the Trojan faithful think it is. All kinds of stories about how they should go after Mario Cristobol (and others). Does anyone seriously think Cristobol would leave Oregon for USC?!?

Since the big upset in 2007, Stanford's record against USC is 10-6 overall and 1-1 in conference championship games (2015 W, 2017 L). Helton has 3 of those 6 Trojan victories, while Sark (2014), Orgeron (2013 acting) and Carroll (2008) each have one.
And JT Daniels proves again that it isn't always a bad thing to get beat out and forced to transfer. He now gets to ride high with the currently #2-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, while Kedon Slovis must try to steer the Trojan ship into a shaky future. Where would you rather be playing QB?

After the loss, Helton had nothing to say except that give us time, we will be fine. That refrain had already worn out it's welcome at U$C. The U$C coaching staff is also kind of cobbled together to appease the fan base who didn't like the program trajectory and blamed the assistants. Going Air Raid was not Helton's choice. As a result, Helton had to hire people with which he had no history and no relationship and who he really didn't choose. While they all may be good coaches, their ability to work together is/was suspect.
