Call me cynical, but how much of this is UW building a "for cause" case, one incident at a time in case they'd rather spend buyout money elsewhere?

Nope, they are honoring the terms of his contract, even though there are allegations that what happened on the sideline against Oregon is not the first time Lake got physical with a player.

“Lake comes in on just a complete rampage pretty much, picks up Quinten Pounds and throws him into a locker,” one eyewitness said. “Those lockers there were wooden lockers, and it was violent. It really caught everyone by surprise. It was really unprompted. He just kind of did that and then went on a tangent about how the offense needs to start playing better.”

But I’m sure it was to prevent Pounds from running out of the locker room and picking up a boneheaded penalty.  The thing about people like Lake is that it is rarely just once.

The Seattle Times had five witnesses.  The interpretation on the severity varried as did the interpretation of the severity of Lake’s actions on the sideline, but there seems to be little question that it happened.  And again, these things rarely happen in isolation.  But that is neither here nor there, since Washington is not going to fire him for cause and Lake gets to walk away with 9 million for not coaching. . Ironic then, that he will make more money not coaching than Shaw is getting criticized for earning while actually coaching.
