Colorado has given us fits over the past few years. First there is their coach, JR Payne, who led lowly Santa Clara to beat us before she went to Colorado in one of our worst losses of the last decade. Then, at Colorado, she has continued to instill her bruising defensive style in ways that mess up our rhythm offense. Last year they beat us in overtime at Colorado for one of our two losses. Mya Hollingshed scored 32 in that one. The previous year we only won when Williams heaved nearly a half court shot at the buzzer that went in. We beat them a little more handily when they came to Maples.
Colorado essentially got everyone back this year, so they will be every bit as difficult and are probably improved over a year ago. Hollingshed is maturing into an elite player. She is averaging 15 points and makes 44% of her treys--not bad for a 6'3" super senior. It is troubling that Tara's scouting report defense couldn't hold her to under 30 points last year.
This year Colorado improved by getting 6'3" center Quay Miller to transfer from Washington. Miller is averaging 12 points and shooting 57%--what you want from a center. Miller has not been starting but is their second leading scorer.
And of course Colorado continues to have Jaelynn Sherrod, a 5'7" junior guard who has torched us in the past. She has a 4:1 assist:turnover ratio and is scoring about 9 ppg.
Frida Foreman, the three point shooting freshman sensation last year, is still their most prolific three point shooter but is only at 26%--I presume because everyone knows about her and defends her closely.
Peanut Tuitele is back again, not scoring prolifically but is a classic glue player and defensive star.
Colorado is unbeaten, of course, and is beating other teams by a 19 point average margin--chiefly through its defense since they score about 70 points on average. You would have to say they are a solid offensive team but a great defensive team, true to JR's form. Their opponents shoot about 10 points less well than they do.
We have the better team, but the better team does not always win. They have elevation, a defense that we know will ruin our offensive scheme and make us scrap for points, and some excellent key players. It will be fascinating to see how Tara goes after Hollingshed this time.
