WBB: Stanford 63 -- Colorado 46

Tough 2nd quarter. Colorado ramping up the physical defense.

We are losing 29-30 at the half. Even though Hollingshed picked up a third foul early in the second quarter, sloppy play by us leading to a handful of turnovers and missed layups gave Colorado momentum and they went on a run to take a one point halftime lead.
Our shooting percentage is down to 46% as Brink is missing some layups in the paint and the Buffaloes are cutting off our passing lanes and stealing the ball.
Meanwhile we need to defend the three point line better as they are 4/8 from long range.

Key halftime stat is free throws. CO 8-10, ST 2-2.
Brink not playing as strong as usual. Look for more Belibi-Prechtel in 2h.

The PAC-12 network apparently brought in the Colorado announcers for this game.
Examples of uncalled fouls: Q2: 3:44 Miller grabs Brink around the waist and pulls her out of position. Q2 3:05 As Brink does a layup, a Colorado player goes right through her body.

We're seeing why Stanford will always have serious problems against a pressure D. We collapsed in H2 against SC, are on thin ice today, and, if we get there, will have serious problems with SC again at the Dance. You'd think that the coaches would have been preparing the team for this since the loss to SC. Not much evidence of that to this point. Jones scoreless to this point?!!! Come on! Colorado is pressing on the perimeter to prevent the 3-point shots thus forcing us to try to take it to the hoop. Jones is essential there, but is not producing.

Jones gets pummeled before her shot and no foul is called. Brink is just standing there and gets called for a foul. Sheesh.
We've got 7 blocks and 7 steals.
Prechtel is playing stellar defense.
Brink is 2 points from a double double.
And . . . Jump gets trampled by a Buffalo shooting a three at the end of the 3rd Q and no whistle. WTF?

We lead 43-35 after three quarters as this game has turned into a defensive slog; luckily we held Colorado to just five points in the third quarter but managed to score 14 to turn a one point deficit into an eight point advantage.
Our shooting percentage has really dropped down to Earth; now just at 37.8%. It took until the third quarter for Jones to score her first points of the game. Lexie is the only player for us in double figures with Brink, Jump and Wilson with 8 each.
Defensively, we've locked down on them and we'll need to do the same

Bad calls that I noticed in the third:
Initial shot by Hull: Her shooting arm was knocked way to the left of her body. No call.
3 second call was a 2-second call (into the lane at 2:23; called at 2:21).
22 seconds left: Jump ball call was wrong. No Stanford player had their hand on the ball when the player came down. That's a travel.
End of quarter: Obvious foul on a 3-point shot.

Add to your list the call on Brink's beautiful blocked shot.
Jones got Hollingshed in the air with a pump fake committing her 5th foul . . . but it wasn't called!

Lexie gets the game ball today. What a warrior!
How about the Stanford defense! 9 blocks, 12 steals, forced 21 turnovers, and held CO to 16 points in the second half!
Oh, and held Sherrod to 0-5 from the field and only 1 point on a FT.

Q4 calls: Hollingshead goes into the lane at 4:36. At 4:31 she is still in there, and the ball is thrown to her. No 2-second call there.
4:09 Miller completely undercuts and backs through Brink.

agree on Lexie, especially given the great defense on and physical abuse she took from Hollingshed -- even the last play elbow and push before Hollinshed removed.

At halftime, Tara probably told them that CO was steamrolling our guys and fouls weren’t being called. Stanford got a lot more physical in the second half.

We win 63-46 as we bookended the game with our best offensive quarters - 20 each in the first and fourth quarters (meaning we scored just 23 in the middle two quarters combined).
It was a defensive physical battle with a lot of bad no-calls (I wonder, why given that basketball and football for that matter, there's no system in place to grade referees during the offseason). Fans will always have a reason to complain about calls or no-calls and unfortunately in close games, those judgment calls could decide the outcome of a contest. I wonder if there will ever be technology to help this out or as long as there are sports, these complaints will always be there?
Anyway, back to the game.
We had four players in double figures with Jump close behind with eight points:
Both Brink and Jones missed a lot of close ones around the basket and it took Haley more than half of the game to get her first points, but Cameron still finished with a double double - 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jones came up with some key baskets in the fourth to make sure Colorado couldn't get it any closer than they did as she scored all of her 10 points in the second half.
Lexie was our leading scorer with 14 points, as she was our best long range shooter this game (3/7) and also had 6 steals to go along with it; she was critical in our defensive efforts, especially against Hollingshed.
Wilson continued her turnover-less streak despite the pressure defense of the Buffaloes. Every other starter had two turnovers each, while she had none. She had another five assists to continue this amazing four game streak - 21 assists to zero turnovers. Plus she had 10 points on 4/8 shooting.
Jump was manhandled at the end of a quarter while going for a three and finished only 2/7 from long range. Belibi did not have a great game, just 1/1 with three turnovers.
Given Colorado's defense, turning the ball over 13 times was not too bad; I think we had that number in the first quarter alone when we played them in Boulder a few weeks ago.
Defensively, Hollingshed shot very efficiently (4/6), but she still only took six shot opportunities all game along; it helped that she picked up quick fouls in the first half and sat for large periods of time. The rest of their starting line was 6/28 and when you add their key reserve player Quay Miller's shooting numbers, they were 8/39 from the field.
We held them to 25% shooting overall and 30% from long range, but they managed to snag 17 offensive rebounds.
It's never pretty playing Colorado but I think it's good to play against different styles of opponents, especially back to back.
Now comes our final regular season road trip to play Oregon State on Friday and a nationally televised matchup against a fully healthy Ducks squad in Eugene next Sunday afternoon, probably our most challenging conference game.

Great to see us win "easily" in they type of game that has given us problems in the past. I think Colorado is solid. Hollingshed and Sharrod are both tough and talented.
- Our players battled across the board. Agree - game ball to Lexie (6 steals!). She battled Hollingshed all game long. And how about the play where Hollingshed and Lacie bumped heads. Hollingshed goes down and stays down. Lacie gets up and sprints the court! Anna was superb defensively.
- Definitely Cam's most frustrating game, even though she did finish with a double double. She was mad at herself for missing the bunnies, mad at the refs for the ridiculous foul calls. I swear, that girl is jinxed. They are just looking to give her a couple ticky-tack fouls per game. That blocked shot was the play of the game and I have no idea where the foul came from. The announcers said it was contact on the Colorado player's left arm, but I didn't see any contact there. I really hope the refs let things go in the post-season (they typically do), for all teams. No one wants the best players in the country sitting on the bench for silly stuff. And I do mean both teams. I couldn't stand the call on Boston in the FF game last season at the end of the 2nd quarter with a few seconds left on the clock on a "reach in" on a standing player, 25 feet from the basket. Please. And that whistle really came back to haunt them.
- Also on Cam...the box score has her for 1 block and 0 steals. Really? I guess I don't understand what constitutes a blocked shot.
- Anna - 5 more assists and still no turnovers, plus 4-8 from the field. Just what the team needs.

- Also on Cam...the box score has her for 1 block and 0 steals. Really? I guess I don't understand what constitutes a blocked shot.
- Anna - 5 more assists and still no turnovers, plus 4-8 from the field. Just what the team needs.
I agree that Lexie gets the game ball, but Anna deserves honorable mention. The great team defense made the difference, but those two were exceptionally good.
Ashton was a better matchup against this team. Cam was, fairly or unfairly, pushed around all game. Playing the two of them at once is a good option to have, but Ashton was effective in the 9 minutes that she played. She should be averaging 10-12 minutes a game depending upon the matchups. Fran is not a 5. She is an excellent 4, but she is only a 5 against smaller teams than this one. I realize it is hard to give Fran her minutes with Haley playing at the 4 too. If Tara is down on Ashton then Kiki has shown that she deserves the minutes at the 5.
When will Tara realize that Lacy is a great defender, but not a PG? She cannot be a PG against good teams. Let Anna and Jordan take over the PG role. Another solid win against a top 25 team. Can Haley get some minutes at the 3, while Fran is at the 4 and Lexie at the 2?

We won, no one was injured, and that is all to the good.
However, there are many teams we might face in the tournament who can play Colorado style defense and who have far superior offenses. I am worried that it still was difficult for us to handle the defense. A 63 point game after we knew exactly what was coming is not a confidence-booster.
However, we showed we can play Colorado-style defense even better than they can. We had 12 steals to their 9, they had 21 turnovers to our 13.
This is not "pretty" basketball. A good indicator of pretty basketball is when most shots are assisted. We had only 10 assists on 25 made baskets. Colorado was worse. They had 6 assists on 14 made baskets. Yes, only 14 baskets in the entire game for them.
One terrible stat for us: we gave up 17 O-boards to Colorado. Those and the unequal free throws are what kept the Colorado offense competitive for so long.
At the end of the day, they shot only 25%. I shudder to think of what will happen if we meet a team that can hold us to 63 but shoots 45% at the other end.
And now we start what may be as great a challenge as the Tennessee--South Carolina trip--the trip to Oregon. Both those teams have improved markedly and both those teams are much tougher at home.
