Detention extended through May 19 by a Russian court, as reported by Tass.
Quote:U.S. Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion Brittney Griner could face up to five years in a Russian labor camp after she was arrested in the country last month, an expert said."
"One thing I find a little worrisome is this extension of her preliminary holding from two months to three months, because you have to go to a higher authority to get it lengthened."

We released an infamous Russian arms dealer likely responsible indirectly for many deaths to get her back. Is that worth it? Does it not incentivize essentially the kidnapping of American citizens abroad since we will give into demands to get them back?
Normally I’m a Biden fan but I don’t like this. I would rather use the stick and not the carrot. I’d have threatened to arm Ukraine with everything from tomahawks on down and really put Russian bases at risk.

I am very torn about this also. I lived overseas for 10 years and was EXTREMELY AWARE of the draconian penalties for drug possession in other countries. As was every other American, including every schoolkid at the local American Schools. Maybe the Russians planted stuff, who knows. But bottom line IMHO it's a bad trade and now a terrible man is free again.
I hope Griner can find a way to demonstrate her appreciation for her freedom.

From a utilitarian/consequentialist position the return of Bout won't have any appreciable impact, given that while he has been in our custody he has already been replaced with other equally capable and equally scurrilous individuals doing what he once did. So his return will not in fact make us less safe in any immediate sense.

FIFY. Russia isn't above planting evidence to achieve its means, or poison people who are a threat to its regime.

Sure, but her lawyer admitted the drugs were hers. Maybe they were just playing the hand they were dealt and the drugs were planted, but the defense was that it was to help manage pain or some BS.

Which part do you consider to be BS?
