Niners may have slow release time….. I don’t expect Lance to be a game manager type. Big plays. And big mistakes. High learning curve. If he’s significantly better by game 12 or so, they got something. We shall see. Defense and running game. Hmmmm.

Shanahan said Armstead will be out a few weeks. I don't know if that meant three weeks or 2-3 weeks, but it hardly matters. He doesn't need to practice and he absolutely doesn't need to play in exhibition games.
Speaking of such games... Shanahan said two things I found interesting on that topic. First, he said the Niners play 3 exhibition games in 13 days. That likely means more guys will get to play more snaps in those games than is typically the case because there is no way they are going to make the same guys play a lot of snaps over those games. The second thing Shanahan said is he would prefer to have practices than exhibition games. Spoiler alert: the only reason these games are played is for more $. Has nothing at all to do with preparing for the season. I've always thought if College Football teams can just start playing games without games that don't count, the NFL could, and apparently at least one NFL coach agrees.
On a related note, Kyle Shanahan is now my favorite coach at press time ever. He is as transparent as he possibly can be and never defensive. He is engaging and explains his reasoning without coming across as superior or arrogant, like the reporters don't know the game or aren't as knowledgable as he is. They aren't, but he never talks down to them. Really admire his demeanor.

I believe the 2022 Niners team has the most talented roster since I started following the team closely in 1980. The best Niners teams over that time had the following position groups represented at the Pro Bowl:
1984: QB, OL, DB
1989: QB, WR, DB
1994: QB, WR, RB, TE, DL, DB
The 2022 team has proven Pro Bowl talent at: OL, WR, TE, DL, LB, DB.
It's probably the most talented roster a first time starting QB in his second year has ever started on. The Defense will be one of the top units in the NFL, which will make it easier for Lance to "live to fight another day" rather than force throws that aren't there. If he just runs the offense, limits mistakes, and makes a few plays when the called play breaks down, the Niners should win 10+ games.

The OL is more of a question mark than an issue to be concerned about at this point, IMO.
One positive for me is the fact rookie Spencer Burford has clearly supplanted the worst 2021 OL starter, Daniel Brunskill at RG. So we know RG will be improved even if a rookie plays there. That leaves LG and C as the questions.
Brunskill has played C before and is in the mix to start there along with Jake Brendel. Niners fans living as prisoners in the moment last year largely declared the current LG, 2nd year former 2nd rd pick, Aaron Banks a bust, but Shanahan said he was close to playing over Brunskill at RG as a rookie after recovering from injury, so he is not a bust. It will be hard to be as consistent as Laken Tomlinson, but if Banks is better than 2021 Brunskill at RG, OL might not be an issue. That said, it does seem OL is the weakest position group on the team. The other groups are just absolutely loaded with top end players.
One more thing about the OL. Some very young guys on the interior are facing an experienced and talented Front 7 that will challenge even the best and most experienced OLs in the NFL.
The Athletic reports 6-1 300 G and UFA Jason Poe has moved to 2nd team and is more than holding his own in 1-1 pass rush blocking drills. That's pretty damn impressive. Even though short with long arms, he has quickness not common to the position and doesn't get pushed around. Will be fun to see him playing the exhibition games.

That said, it does seem OL is the weakest position group on the team. The other groups are just absolutely loaded with top end players.
One more thing about the OL. Some very young guys on the interior are facing an experienced and talented Front 7 that will challenge even the best and most experienced OLs in the NFL.
The Athletic reports 6-1 300 G and UFA Jason Poe has moved to 2nd team and is more than holding his own in 1-1 pass rush blocking drills. That's pretty damn impressive. Even though short with long arms, he has quickness not common to the position and doesn't get pushed around. Will be fun to see him playing the exhibition games.

Maurice Hurst on season long IR. Depth at DT vanishing. Kinlaw practiced for a day then given a rest day. I don't expect much from him. Nmkendice (I know spelling is as bad as Bobbbbb's) fired up. So far an abject failure with two teams. Once considered one of the best HS lineman ever.

Dead wrong. Sorry. If you can’t play defense or block I don’t care who your quarterback is. If they have a tremendous defense and can run the football they’ll be good. There’s going to be a learning curve. But let’s see how he’s playing about week 12

Dead wrong. Sorry. If you can’t play defense or block I don’t care who your quarterback is. If they have a tremendous defense and can run the football they’ll be good. There’s going to be a learning curve. But let’s see how he’s playing about week 12

Every NFL game Javon Kinlaw has played was with an undiagnosed torn ACL. He had his most extensive practice so far yesterday. I don't know how pessimism about him is warranted. I'm quite intrigued by a DT pair of Armstead and Kinlaw.

The correct word to use with Kinlaw is skepticism. We don't know how he can play with a properly functioning knee. If Kinlaw had played poorly with a healthy knee for two years, pessimism that he will improve in year three would be warranted. Although, that said, Arik Armstead wan't great shakes his first couple years either. He really didn't come into his own until year 4 or 5, and he's proven better at DT that he didn't play consistently until his 7th season.

DeShawn Watson was suspended for six games, which seems like a slap in the wrist. The NFL agrees, and has appealed his suspension, with a final decision by Roger Goodell. One reasonable outcome is a one year suspension after the appeal. (As an aside, the allegations, from multiple women, were credible and publicly known. WTF were the Browns thinking trading three!!! first round picks and signing him for a record setting contract.)

So OF do you have inside info or have you looked at the X-Rays of Armstead? Are you a practicing orthopedist? He's in his eighth year and played most every down at Oregon. Knees are tricky. I actually have one just like that.
