Trey Lance has started 3 games as an NFL QB and he has 3 first time starters - two with one NFL start - in front of him at LG, C, RG. Moreover, Lance only played one season in college. 

Lance needs to start 4 straight games before he can really be judged, but even then, it’s going to take a couple years to see his true ability. If Garoppolo starts ahead of him, that timeline will be further delayed. 

If the rest of the team was great and Lance was responsible for losing, then maybe there is an argument to be made he isn’t ready. The team around him was not great in week 1. Singling out Lance as the reason for losing is only credible when that is the case.

Did you watch the game, or are you just judging by the stats again? Did the team overthrow a wide open back up TE at the 10? Did the team throw a boneheaded pick? Did the team look uncomfortable in the pocket and make poor decisions on when to throw, to run, or to dump the ball?

Interesting commentary this week from Tim Ryan. Lance has a very long windup and delivery. At this level, it is critical to get the ball out quickly, and the longer it takes to get the pass off, the quicker the throwing windows close. Lance, because of his slow delivery, has to read the situation much more quickly, than say Garoppolo, who has a lighting fast delivery. He's not there yet. Not close. Ryan's words, or at least his thoughts, as as best as I can remember them.

Way too soon to tell on Lance, though as Phogge mentioned, do you really turn the keys of a fast car over to someone who just got their license?

And FWIW, I was a Mac Jones guy as he seemed perfect for the Niners: he'd already led a great team and knows how to. Now Jones is driving an '86 Isuzu pickup. Will be interesting to see how he does.

Totally agree with the comment by Tim Ryan that Lance has a round delivery which takes longer than JG's quick delivery and thus a quicker decision is necessary. It can be fixed with practice, but certainly isn't fixed yet. When he has time, it enables him to throw longer bombs than JG.

Not stupidity at all.  They aren’t going to give him 4 games unless they squeeze out wins.  Period.  This is not a rebuilding team. It’s a team built to win now.  Not two years from now. If he doesn’t, he will be benched. If he wins today, no matter how it looks, he will stay in starting role.  If he plays poorly against what is not a good team, and they lose to go 0-2 (against two below average teams) the calls for JG will be deafening.

Niners with a 27-7 victory.  Garoppolo was 13/21 for 154 yards, 1 TD and a rushing TD.  Was sacked once.  Trey Lance ran three times for 13 yards.  He runs like a fullback, heads down.  Probably worked out well his single year in the FCS division.  Not so well in the NFL...Lance was carted off on the driving stretcher, broken ankle, out for the year.

One oddity: Lance and Garropolo had virtually identical passer ratings, though Garoppolo had a QB Rating of 60.6, and Lance's QB Rating was 51.2.

Defense didn't give up a point and took the ball away on two interceptions and a two recovered fumbles. Bosa, two sacks and two tackles for loss and five QB hits, Givens three tackles for loss.  Special teams was excellent, except Seattle ran back a blocked extra point for a touchdown. They gave up 15 yards yards per carry on three kick returns and zero on the only punt return.  Gould was 2/3 on FGs and 3/3 on XPs. Wishnowsky averaged 44 yards on three punts, two of the three inside the 20. Jeff Wilson and Deebo Samuel, very impressive, Brandon Aiyuk did well, Tyrion Davis Price unimpressive.  Danny Gray targeted twice, no catches.

Lance needs more experience so the game will slow down for him and his reaction  to what he sees speeds up. That only happens with reps throwing, not running between the Tackles, and the running creates high injury risk.

Shanahan cited Josh Allen to defend running Lance so much, as he appeared defensive when reporters rightfully questioned the wisdom of running a QB so much.

If I were Lance’s agent, I’d be calling John Lynch today and ripping the bark off him for putting my guy at so much injury risk by running him like Derrick Henry, and retarding his development as a passer.

My memory of Montana was that he was slippery, rarely running for long gains, but he avoided sacks pretty well.  His sack percentage was 5.5%, compared with Steve Young who had a higher sack percentage (around 7.4% for the Niners, if memory serves).
